Updated on 1/27/2013 at 4:58 a.m.: The lip synching debate is pointless. She sang to her own voice. Madonna and Whitney Houston have done it. Folks are acting like they have amnesia and never heard Beyonce sing live, in concerts and hasn't had a career spanning over a decade worth of singing. She missed practice. She was singing in the cold at an Inauguration where the highlight should've been on a two-term African-American president on MLK Day. *blank stare* Major news outlets covering this b.s. repulse me even more. Knock it off. Pay attention to who really matters: the leader of the free world.

And now on to the GQ debate (my original post):

I've had enough of hearing the snide comments. I don't know this lady. Never met her. I've never even seen her perform live, but I respect her business savvy, her dedication to health, her voice and her live performance. And I'm just tired of these petty comments on blog message boards about her. Enough is enough. The more comments I hear dogging her out for that GQ cover, the more I actually like the cover in spite of my original reaction being, "This is a bit extra. Why show all of this even though you're already an established and well-respected artist." But the more women (especially) continue to insult her, the more I want to high-five her for doing the cover just to make some of you mad.

The insults:

A mother shouldn't do a cover like this: Not all mothers look like a "before" picture after having a baby. She was never out of shape to begin with. Yes, she's been a bit thicker in some areas, but what is wrong with being a healthy weight? I don't understand how someone can be insulted because another person regularly works out and you complain from a couch. She was already working with the FLOTUS (and mom) Michelle Obama (who looks great and has no problem with showing off her biceps) during the "Let's Move" campaign. She's been linked to personal trainers A.J. Johnson (from "House Party") and Jeanette Jenkins. We're acting like mothers can't possibly lose weight after a kid. Some women drop pregnancy weight. Some women work hard as hell to get it off. Prime examples are Tina Turner, Alicia Keys, Jada Pinkett Smith, Nicole Ari Parker, Halle Berry, Jennifer Hudson and Regina King. I don't have children and I've never had to get rid of pregnancy weight, but this isn't a foreign concept. Hell, walk into baby stores and you'll see jogging strollers.

I completed a post about this for 2011 so I'll keep it going for this year, too. I started on Saturday night, Dec. 14, and finished at 3:51 a.m. on December 30.

13. Getting the birthday card in the mail from my brother with us as kids that said, "I got your back" on the inside. I thought that was pretty cool and I wasn't expecting a card at all because he's not usually a card sender. He sent two. (In my defense, I swear it looked like a stuff monkey!)
14. My boss reenacting what it's like to walk a family member's dogs (She's funny regardless but she's even funnier when she tells a story.)
15. Reading "Keeping the Promise"; I miss Mr. Ellison. I've worked with a lot of PR reps but he was the most efficient, polite and fascinating to talk to about his own writing history. R.I.P. I'd read everything he ever wrote.
16. Making the November page in my mother's 2013 photo calendar. I made one side super silly photos of us and the other pretty photos, but the silly photos are the best ones (IMO). My favorites: Her puckering her lips out and me hiding in a box.
17. Surprise visit from my brother-from-another-mother Shuntal at Christmas. I haven't seen him in person in at least eight or nine years. It was very good to see him although he came for other circumstances.
18. Hanging out with my cousin Yolanda on Christmas Eve. I never see her on Christmas, only Thanksgiving, and I really had a good time catching up with her.
19. Catching up with my old girl scout leader Lela (won't include last name) is always fun. I was a girl scout from the age of 9-14 but I have made a point of staying in contact with her. She's hilarious and always a pleasure to be around.
20. My grandfather accusing me of biting my dog on a calendar photo. I told him Faith nuzzled up to my face. His response? "Well, somebody's got to initiate the kiss."
21. Surprising Aunt Marguerite with a visit from my grandfather for her second 100th birthday party (Doesn't a centenarian deserve two parties? I think so!) Click here to see the video of some friends and family singing to her.
22. Setting up my cousin Hareder's website for a pageant (I learned a lot more about her and enjoyed reading her responses to FAQs. It was educational and far more enjoyable to create than I expected.)

I tried being open-minded about this with two guys who had suspended licenses. It got old very quickly. 8. Men who understand and follow the motto that the words "woman" or "lady" are not synonymous with "bitch" or "ho." They're two different groups of people. Listen to Jay-Z's song "Bitches versus Women." I agree with it.
9. Men who spend wisely (If you want to splurge, that's your business but please do something else with your money besides budget for strippers, weed, jewelry and video games. Savings accounts, 401(k) and CDs help you create a future.)
10. Men who like to read for fun (Newspapers [besides the sports section], books, magazines [something other than just entertainment articles])
11. Men who respect individuality (I applaud the Drakes of the world who will look at an industry and still be themselves instead of the carbon copy of what they think other people want them to be. Just be you. Somebody will appreciate it sooner or later.)

14. Men who believe in monogamy (I've never caught any guy I was dating cheating, but I've heard too many horror stories. If you plan on having sex with multiple women, save her the waste of time and energy. Date; don't be in a relationship. And don't even bother to ask me to date you if you have a girlfriend or wife. It'll never happen.)
15. Men who do not use the word "nigger" or "nigga" like it's a compliment. (It will never be and both men and women sound absolutely disrespectful every time they say it. The meaning has not changed. Expand your vocabulary. And I say this from the perspective of someone who used to argue about how it was okay to use it. NMU changed that.)
16. Men who can fix things, especially mechanics or appliance repair people (I swear blue collar jobs like this are so underrated. I totally respect white collar jobs, but men who can fix things are great people.)
17. Men who are laid-back (I'm not the most nonchalant person in the world so I tend to shy away from other people who are glued to drama. The best relationships I've been in were with guys who preferred peace over looking for beef, and we parted on good terms and occasionally stayed in touch over the years.)

1. Kevin Hart's ex-wife's BBWLA spoof: Call me a terrible person but I laughed hard as ever watching this spoof that Kevin Hart's ex-wife Torrei did. I really should stop watching "Basketball Wives LA" but it's just so horrifying and funny at the same time. (The Miami version makes me mad for real so I toned it down on that show. I can't handle Tami or Evelyn at all.) And as much as I like Malaysia, this spoof of the show was dead on. The only thing they left out was Brooke constantly talking about that damn King cover.

I don't follow the Olympics. If it wasn't for work-related tasks, I couldn't tell you who did what, but I couldn't help but read the massive Twitter comments about Gabrielle Douglas so I had to find out what in the world did she do. I can barely tell you the winners of any Olympic titles (minus John Carlos, and that's because I read "The John Carlos Story"). After a long-winded Twitter debate about absent fathers (another topic I'm completely baffled by with one Twitter users insane defense for fathers being trapped and how it's the women's fault that black men aren't around), I thought I was done with this topic. Then there was the newscaster who said "Who cares if she's black?" that baffled me, especially considering how overly patriotic so many people are and how hard they want Americans to win competitions. Why is it OK to be proud, wear flags, chant about America but a girl who makes history as the first black woman to take home the gold for the woman's individual all-around gymnastics event should be ignored? Who cares that she's black? I do. It is possible to be as proud to see someone black make that achievement as it is someone American.

But my bigger issue is reading baffling comments about her hair, the first thing I thought of was an argument I got into on Facebook about the Surgeon General. People felt like Regina Benjamin aired out black women's hair secrets by talking about how we may hesitate to workout because of the length of time and trouble we go through to get our hair done. It's true. There is a love/hate relationship with exercise, especially swimming, moreso with women who have relaxers. It's the main reason I don't swim more. But I work out four or five days per week because I refuse to let my hair control the rest of my body. And when a young lady is making history in the Olympics, I say she deserves a free pass.

"Keep smiling. It makes everyone wonder what you have been up to." (That's a sign that used to be in my maternal grandmother's home and I took it when she passed. I used to enjoy reading it and wondering what made her want to hang it up. Me? I know exactly why I have it.) Anyway, on to the ten for this week and the next:

1. Friends/family/co-workers who read my e-mails: I type 81 wpm so it's nothing for me to send a long e-mail. I've heard complaints, compliments and jokes about it. One guy I used to talk to said he'd slip into a bubble bath with a glass of wine and read my e-mails. An old friend/past co-worker used to tell me she'd read my "Bible" messages (meaning as long as the Bible). My mother cracks jokes about printing the e-mails out. Some folks complain about them, and so I try to keep my messages shorter for them (because if there's one thing I know how to do, it's to ignore people as quickly as they want to ignore me -- and when you start getting one word/sentence long responses from me, I truly just don't like you). But back to my brighter note: I asked a couple of buddies of mine about a guy situation in a three-part e-mail. Yes, those e-mails were lengthy, as in a page or two. Not only did they read them within 24-36 hours, I got long messages back. I love it when people are as interested in my life as I am theirs and make time to hear what's going through my mind. It takes me a long time to open up to people about my personal life (trust me, nothing on this blog is something I wouldn't say to a ballroom full of people), so if I share something with you and ask for your advice, I really want it. And I appreciate that they took time out of their busy days to see what was going on in mine. At the risk of being cliche and quoting rap music, *in my Jay-Z voice* "You could've been anywhere in the world, but you're here with me." And you better believe it's mutual. I read every single e-mail, Amazon comment, Tweet, letter, card and anything else that's sent my way. Hell, I even go through press releases from publicists who don't bother to make sure I'm the right person to send them to and reply back. If you sent it to me, you obviously felt like I should want to know so I'll respect that wish every time.

2) Behind the Music (Nas): I am relentlessly critical about his persistence with using the n-word, but I am still very much a fan. I remember seeing him perform live at DePaul University, and it only cost me $5. I have owned all of his CDs minus the untitled one (you already know what the name of it originally was). I had the beat for "Dr. Knockboot" as my voicemail in college for a couple months and used to rap that song (and Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'" all the time). While watching "Behind the Music" last night (twice), I looked at him and Kelis and thought how friggin' cute they were together. I wish those two would've worked out because it was cool seeing how happy they looked, and I cracked up about him saying "gold tooth for no reason." I remember going back and forth with a high school friend about whether "Ether" was necessary and him blasting "One Mic" while we were headed to a party. Plus I still love and respect that song "Bridging the Gap." There are so few hip-hop songs dedicated to fatherhood, and I liked seeing him and his father showing off their talents. Okay, and yes, he's gorgeous (with and without the chipped tooth).

Man, I'm totally behind on doing these weekly blogs but still determined to do them. Even if I'm the only one that reads them (not true considering I see my web visits per day, thanks for visiting!), it's therapeutic to think of things that make me smile. There have just been so many high and low moments in the past month so some will be from February and others from March.

1) Talking to my godfather, Elvin: I spent two hours on the phone with him today. There is 100% chance I'm going to hear some great stories, laugh more often than not and then we'll go into deep conversations about society and probably touch on finances. I can talk to him about anything, and he'll give me the raw, uncut version. Crazy about him (and his southern accent when he says "Monnie").

2) Watching Hugh Laurie on the deaf teen episode for music vibrations: The "House" scene was to find out if the guy who had a hearing impairment could somehow feel better with music. Now normally people would think House would come in with classical music or maybe some random pop tune. Nope, he comes in with his cane, a big boombox and is dancing to Public Enemy's "Fight the Power." I died. I loved that scene so much that I rewound it to watch it again and again.

The reason I liked doing the "Five things I'm digging right now" was because it forced me to find the "bright side" of something. I need to do that more often and thought that was a cool way of doing it (original idea courtesy of Andy Cohen). So in the same spirit of it and since I'm done with that for 2011, I'm going to do a list of 365 things I've been digging all year. They're not in order, just the first things that pop into my head that I liked the entire year. (I started today as of 2:30 p.m. I finished on 12/31/11 at 10:38 p.m., in between running errands. HAPPY (almost) NEW YEAR!)
